What is going on? October has come and gone without even ONE entry! Let me summarize...

SANS 2006 in Las Vegas - I spent 8 days of intense network security training at the SANS conference. Took a 6 day class in perimeter security and a 2 day class on Cisco router security. Played craps almost every night after class and dinner and won $1000. Its all about finding that hot table.

Work is busy as always. More projects are possible all the time. I get to pick and choose what is next for me most of the time. Im working currently on MPLS on our backbone, event correlation appliances, the future of our SONET equipment and our next core bandwidth expansion, re-writing all our DMZ ACLs (I hate this one), supporting the Sheriff's department new Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD or 911) system, and yesterday we talked again about moving our redundant Internet connection to Santa Maria for better geographic diversity. No wonder I have no time at work to write my blog!

Mom (Grandma Marcia) came to visit for a couple of days at the end of the month. We all had a great time. I think she and Jessie really like playing together. Heidi and I got a date night out of the visit and that is always welcome.

The pond is going well but slowly. I put in a diverter valve and some new plumbing in for a mid level discharge on the pond. This allows me to turn down (or off) the waterfall and send the water directly into the pond. The waterfall was too strong and too noisy. In addition, I was still loosing quite a bit of water that way even after sealing the pool at the top. It seems that I was not loosing water there but farther down the waterfall. I thought at first that it must just be splash, but after putting in the diverter and turning down the waterfall to a pleasant trickle, it still lost way too much water. So, I am working on landscaping and other things and just have the waterfall off for the moment. I will get back to it later. I think I will have to end up sealing the whole thing with that two part epoxy paint. I must have punctured the liner under the waterfall... I don't see where it could otherwise be spilling out.

One fun thing about the mid-level return is that I put in a venturi for pond aeration. So, lots of bubble and oxygen now for the pond. Cleared up the whole thing really quickly and I can now see the bottom of the pond for the first time in a month. Next is to test the water to see what it is really up to.

Anyway, I better get back to work.

Oh, just one more thing... I spent a whole bunch of money on a new computer because I purchased the new version of NWN (that game I play) and it would not even run on my old clunker (it IS over 2 years old now). So, last night I started putting it together and hopefully the memory sticks will show up today so I can complete the project.

Well, that does not seem to work and I am pretty sure the leak is there. So, I get to do it over but will do it right this time.

I expect to fix some things I currently do not like about the way the water flows out from the falls also. It has too much force. So I will get a bigger pipe for the final runn and slow down the discharge some.

I will post pictures soon and hopefully a video clip of the waterfall.

Is meathead one word or two?

So there is this guy at work who I know is this manager for our department but I don't really know what he does besides manage the reprographics office an used to have some other position in the department. Anyway, I was in a meeting with him today where he is leading this project to put electronic meters on circuits around the county so that departments can pay their fair share of electricity costs. Now, all the folks that share large campuses share the costs according to some formula which I would hope is based on the square footage of their offices.

Part of my job is to inform folks about the risks associated with connecting devices to the network, whether we advise that they be in a DMZ or connected via an isolated network as in this case. So, we meet to discuss our network security concerns around connecting the meters to the County WAN. He immediately begins to get defensive and cannot grasp the concept that someone could break into his computer system through the network. He draws a picture of a box with a line representing a data jack going into it and a PC inside it and says. "So, your concerned that with the device in this vault can be broken into through this wire?" "Yes," I respond... He still doesn't get it. I patiently attempt to explain to him that devices which talk on the TCP/IP network are vulnerable and we would like to isolate the devices to mitigate any possibility of them being compromised. In fact, we talk about the old technology offered by this company and that their literature references PC XT or AT compatible computers. So, we are naturally concerned about a device which was developed before the world wide web may be vulnerable to attack... Ya think?

Meat head? Maybe it's two words...

He finally nods like he gets it and we move on. "Okay, lets say we go with this. How much will it cost." My boss brings up out rates page and gives him an estimate. "Oh, only that much money?" He says. And then agrees to isolate the network.

Mrs. CAPPS. Madam Speaker, I am voting for this resolution because I absolutely condemn Hezbollah's senseless, unprovoked cross-border attacks on Israel, and the murderous rain of missiles it has unleashed on <ST1LACE w:st="on" xmlns:st1="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags">Haifa</ST1LACE> and other northern cities. Terrorist groups like Hezbollah, whose actions have caused the death and misery of hundreds of innocent Israelis and Lebanese, deserve no sympathy and no mercy. Hezbollah needs to be disarmed, for the sake of <ST1LACE w:st="on" xmlns:st1="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags">Israel</ST1LACE>'s security and, indeed, for the stability of the entire region.

And I also join my colleagues in condemning the actions of Syria and <ST1LACE w:st="on" xmlns:st1="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags">Iran</ST1LACE> for their support and arming of Hezbollah. We see the true nature of these regimes when we see the tragic results of their support of terrorist groups like Hezbollah.

But I would have hoped for a different resolution to come before the House. I would have hoped for a more comprehensive resolution that respects the complexity of the issues unfolding in the area, and the necessity for direct <ST1LACE w:st="on" xmlns:st1="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags">U.S.</ST1LACE> involvement in the unfolding tragedy.

A more appropriate resolution would recognize the fundamental difference between Hamas and Hezbollah. Of course, Hamas should be condemned for its actions and the kidnapped Israeli soldier must be returned unharmed. But Gaza and <ST1LACE w:st="on" xmlns:st1="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags">Southern Lebanon</ST1LACE> are two separate situations and this resolution confuses that.

The Palestinian people have legitimate grievances and a solution to these grievances can and must be found through negotiations. Hamas exploits those grievances, but we must not allow Hamas's actions to delegitimize the aspirations of the Palestinian people. Hamas's actions do not negate the reality that we simply must resolve the humanitarian crisis now engulfing Gaza and the <ST1LACE w:st="on" xmlns:st1="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags">West Bank</ST1LACE>.

I believe <ST1LACE w:st="on" xmlns:st1="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags">Israel</ST1LACE>'s security depends on forging a negotiated settlement with the Palestinians that will ensure the safety and security of both peoples. And while I respect Israel's right to defend itself, I am deeply concerned that Israel's response to Hamas' actions is only prolonging the suffering of the Palestinian people and putting off resolution of this decades long problem.

Conversely, Hezbollah has no legitimate grievances with <ST1LACE w:st="on" xmlns:st1="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags">Israel</ST1LACE>.

Hezbollah seeks nothing more than the destruction of <ST1LACE w:st="on" xmlns:st1="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags">Israel</ST1LACE> and there is no negotiating with it. Only through Hezbollah's complete disarmament will we be able to remove its threat to the region.

I am also troubled by the unqualified praise in this resolution for the President and his Administration. The President has done little to stop the meltdown of the <ST1LACE w:st="on" xmlns:st1="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags">Middle East</ST1LACE> that has occurred under his watch. Unlike previous Administrations, including that of his father and President Clinton, he simply hasn't been engaged. And his response here is tragically inadequate, again.

The <ST1LACE w:st="on" xmlns:st1="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags">U.S.</ST1LACE> must engage immediately to bring about a cease fire and help drive a long term solution for the area. Every major Arab-Israeli crisis over the years has ended with <ST1LACE w:st="on" xmlns:st1="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags">U.S.</ST1LACE> involvement--at the highest levels--because the players rely on intermediaries to broker agreements.

We may not like it, but that's the reality of the situation. And given that the stability of the region plays so large a role in our own national security interests, we must continue to engage forcefully if we are committed to bringing about peace in the region. Waiting another week before dispatching the Secretary of State is not a viable response.

Finally, I would note that every day this crisis continues brings a greater risk of direct involvement by Syria and <ST1LACE w:st="on" xmlns:st1="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags">Iran</ST1LACE>. As bad as this situation is now, direct involvement from either Syria or <ST1LACE w:st="on" xmlns:st1="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags">Iran</ST1LACE> would be much, much worse. Immediate, hands-on <ST1LACE w:st="on" xmlns:st1="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags">U.S.</ST1LACE> involvement is critical to keep the situation from spiraling even further out of control.

Madam Speaker, the situation in the <ST1LACE w:st="on" xmlns:st1="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags">Middle East</ST1LACE> grows graver every day. Dozens of Israelis and hundreds of innocent Palestinians and Lebanese civilians have already died. <ST1LACE w:st="on" xmlns:st1="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags">Beirut</ST1LACE>, which has only recently been restored to its historic splendor, is in ruins. A key ally in the area is threatened and our national security interests are as well.

Mr. Jason Poley
5225 Calle Luarda
Santa Barbara, California 93111

Dear Mr. Poley:

Thank you for writing to me to express your concern about
recent violence in the Middle East. I appreciate the time you took to
write me.

As you may know, on July 12, 2006, the terrorist group
Hezbollah launched an unprovoked attack across the Lebanese-Israeli
border, killing eight Israeli troops and capturing two others. This
attack
took place on the heels of escalating violence between Israeli forces
and
Palestinians in Gaza. In recent days, hundreds of shells have been
launched against Israeli population centers near Gaza and in northern
Israel. The Israeli military has responded by targeting terrorist
centers
and infrastructure in Gaza and inside Lebanon. By initiating a campaign
to kidnap Israeli soldiers and launch rocket attacks inside Israel,
Hamas
and Hezbollah, with assistance from Syria and Iran, threaten to
destabilize the Middle East and trigger a wider conflict. Like any
country, Israel has the right and the obligation to defend its
citizens.

I believe that both the Lebanese and the Palestinian governments
must do more to halt terrorist attacks against Israel. The Lebanese
Government must abide by UN Security Council Resolution 1559, which
calls for the extension of Lebanese military control to the entire
territory
of Lebanon, as well as the disarming of all militias operating within
Lebanese territory. The Palestinian Authority must renounce and end all
terrorist activity and incitement; disarm and dismantle its terrorist
infrastructure; and acknowledge Israel's sovereign right to exist
within
safe and secure borders. Syria and Iran share responsibility for the
recent
violence and must cease their support for Hezbollah, Hamas, and other
terrorist groups. I believe that the latest round of violence only
underscores the need for high-level and sustained American diplomacy
that has been sorely lacking.

Again, thank you for writing. I hope that you will continue to
share your thoughts and concerns with me. If you should have any
further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my
Washington, D.C. office at (202) 224-3841. Best regards.

			Sincerely yours,

Jenny & family, I just read most your blogs, how fun to read what you all have been up to. Makes me feel so close.

Now, I am here to talk about our little woman, Jessica. She is still pretty darn adorable. It’s rather amusing now that after becoming 2 years of age personality traits are shining through especially, “No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, etc”. What science it is…the terrible two’s. I can sometimes tease her into saying, “ya, ya, ya” but mostly not. I feel fortunate that most of her little episodes have been mild.
I try and fill our day with one adventure in the morning, such as, the Zoo, Botanical Gardens, beach for playground, sand fun & chasing birds, the Natural History Museum, Ty Warner Marine Museum, play group, visiting grandparents in LA, a walk downtown visiting Daddy for lunch, or, on occasion, playing around the house. After Jessica takes her nap we go in the back yard turn on the hose and bring out her tea set and have an afternoon party. Sometimes she gets an orange to suck on and, of late, we’ve been watching Daddy dig, dig, dig. She is a little sad that Daddy is across the fence but our neighbor with her dog, Curly, have been coming for evening visits and she runs around with Curly throwing him the ball. Curly & Jessica have a special relationship.

So, I was reading yesterday more about filtration in my new koi book and on the Internet and thinking about what this flakey guy from Sacramento said about a mechanical filter before the biological filter. I never got this until yesterday for some reason... I need to have some kind of scrubbing of the gunk from the bottom drain before it enters the biological (bead) filter, or else it will clog the bead filter. Thus making backflushing of the filter more often necessary. Now I need to think about how to do this. There were lots of DIY articles using 55 gallon drums but they all talk about two or three drums. The alternative is to by the specaillty vortex settlement chambers which sell for $600-900 each! Ugh....

The other thing I though about was the waste water and how to dispose of it. Heidi says, "so, all this water from the backflushing... Can we water the plants with it? Attach a hose to the end?" Hmm... So, I calculated that since the pump goes about 5000 gallons an hour, thats about 83 gallons a minute and the backflushing takes 2 or 3 minutes... that's almost 250 gallons of water each backflush! Wow. And the fact that I can't attach a garden hose to the end of this thing for backflushing, it will be far too much preasure for that. So, I think about getting a tub between the hose and the backflush valve to hold the water while backflushing and I can move the hose about at my leasure watering the plants. Hmm... all by gravity so I will need to elevate the tank, and a 250 gallon tank... That's pretty big. Think of your water heater... 40 gallons maybe...

I found a tank on the Internet that should work just fine. Cost plus shipping on a truck... mucho $$ Hmm I will try to find one at a local feed store I think.
